Kathleen’s Journey

Kathleen’s Path to a Fresh Start

Background:
Kathleen, a client transferred to Absolute Care Services (ACS), had been receiving support from another agency for over a year. She faced immense challenges with a severely cluttered home, risking falls and creating a sense of shame and isolation. Her mental health had been fragile since an attempted suicide years ago, and she struggled with feelings of being lost, compounded by limited visits from her family. Kathleen felt overwhelmed by her environment and explained that her cluttered home was a significant barrier to her happiness and connection with her loved ones.

The Support Provided by ACS:
ACS stepped in to provide Kathleen with compassionate, person-centred support to restore her confidence, improve her mental well-being, and make her home a safe and welcoming environment.

1. Decluttering and Reclaiming Spaces:
o The journey began with a simple conversation during the first visit, where Kathleen expressed a desire to regain pride in her home. Together, a plan was formed to declutter her house, starting with the kitchen.
o Kathleen and her ACS care worker worked side by side, clearing out expired food and reorganising her kitchen. Over a series of visits, they removed 9 black bin liners of out-of-date items, creating clean and hygienic spaces for food preparation.
o Encouraged by her progress, Kathleen requested help with her bedroom, leading to a decluttered and organised room. She minimised her belongings, reducing 17 bed sets to just 4, which are now neatly stored in drawers.
2. Promoting Independence and Routine:
o With encouragement, Kathleen began taking pride in completing agreed-upon tasks between visits, celebrating her achievements with statements like, “I’ve done it!”
o She rediscovered her love for cooking, using her cleared kitchen to prepare healthy, home-cooked meals instead of relying on takeaways. This renewed passion even inspired her to try recipes from old cookbooks found during the decluttering process.
3. Rebuilding Confidence and Relationships:
o As Kathleen’s home became more inviting, she began reconnecting with her family. She invited her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren for dinner for the first time. They agreed to visit once the decluttering was fully completed, a milestone Kathleen eagerly anticipates.
o For the first time, Kathleen was asked to babysit her grandchildren overnight, a joyful moment she embraced wholeheartedly.
4. Fostering Self-Care and Well-Being:
o Kathleen discovered a hairdryer during the decluttering, prompting her to wash and style her hair independently. This newfound confidence led her to book a haircut and colour at a local salon.
o She also took the initiative to consult a dentist about replacing her upper teeth, and her new dental plate has been ordered.

Outcomes:
Kathleen’s journey with ACS highlights the profound impact of tailored, empathetic care. She now maintains her decluttered spaces with pride and is working on her final room. Her mental health has significantly improved, as she attributes much of her depression to her previously overwhelming living conditions.

Kathleen’s family relationships are strengthening, and she feels a renewed sense of purpose and joy. Reflecting on her progress, Kathleen shared, “I feel so happy now. My home is no longer a source of shame, it’s a place I’m proud of.”

Through the compassionate support of ACS, Kathleen has reclaimed her independence, rebuilt her confidence, and created a home where she can thrive and welcome her loved ones.
